On Monday night, I found myself asking for the first time in a long time: Could music change the world? Could a band be your life? When I was a teenager I thought music could be the answer for everything. I think that's why I wanted to make music myself. It felt like it could be so much bigger than everything else. Slowly as the years have gone by that feels less and less true. At this current moment, I don't really know what music means anymore. Once ubiquitous for all youth culture now feels a lot more like an accessory than anything else. Culture is over right. If you’re reading anything thats the consensus in 2024. I mean if the New York Times and The New Yorker are saying it then it's gotta be true and I honestly think it is.
That's why I was surprised by a Monday night. My friend Matt invited me out to a show at the Moroccan Lounge. I couldn't see the flyer because of my flip phone but said I was down anyway. As I started to look more into the show I realized that the band only has one song out. A song that they put out about a month ago and that this would be their first show in LA. So I moseyed down to the venue and to my surprise it was packed. So many cool hot people out on a Monday night. Listening to the song before I arrived and checking out the killer video for it I was hyped but didn't know what I was getting into. As we waited for them to take the stage the room continued to fill and by the time they walked out it looked like they might have a sellout on their hands. This felt like something special.
They launched into a set of about 8 songs all but one unreleased. The energy in the room was high enough to make me think that we might be on the precipice of something big. With the second song of the night they play “the song”, That song being 6’ Pole”. The crowd jumped with excitement as the beat came blaring through the speakers. It wasn't all out Pandamona but for an LA crowd, it was definitely a reaction. People knew the words and wanted you to know that they knew them. It was exciting. I thought to myself could this band take over the world? Am I a first adopter? Are they the new strokes? Then they played the rest of their set and I knew that these two white guys are in fact not going to change the world. They are not here to save music or culture but man for 3 minutes and 55 seconds I sure thought they might. Being at the Safe Mind show doesn't mean anything other than being able to say you were at the Safe Mind show because culture is dead. More on that Friday!
- 6’ Pole by Safe Mind: This song is fun. I wish more music was simply fun like this. Maybe that's the start. \
